William Paterson University views compensation as the entirety of monetary and non-monetary benefits provided to our workforce as a critical factor in our ability to attract, retain, reward, and recognize our diverse workforce of qualified employees. Compensation (pay) for unionized positions is governed by contractually negotiated agreements between the State of New Jersey and the respective bargaining unit. For managerial and other positions not covered by a bargaining unit (non-aligned), the University strives to ensure that employees performing the same work, with same or similar skill level, competencies, experience, education, training, and professional credentials are compensated equitably while allowing flexibility driven by strategic initiative and the financial health of the University. Positions at William Paterson University fall into two categories: Unclassified and Classified/Career Service. Unclassified positions are generally executives, managers, and professional, administrative staff who are exempt from the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. This category includes faculty, librarians, AFT professional staff, higher education managers and confidential non-aligned employees. Classified /Career Service positions are generally subject to the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Additionally, hiring, evaluation, promotion and discipline processes are governed by the rules and regulations of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and applicable collective bargaining agreements between the State of New Jersey and the respective unions which represent these employees. Positions in this category are typically administrative and technical support, computing technology, facilities maintenance trades, custodial, and public safety.
